It’s hard to believe this is our second edition. It was a bit of a slow week with the holiday, but I know that we as the protectors of our organizations, we cannot afford to be asleep. The stories of the week highlight a dangerous drift in our baseline assumptions: the belief that our sandboxes can still see what users see, the hope that AI-generated code is as secure as it is fast, and the reliance on third-party vendors to protect data we can no longer control. When a QR code sidesteps a million-dollar perimeter, a logic flaw hides in “clean” AI code, and a vendor breach exposes the giants of the banking world, it forces us to ask if our controls are actually effective or just expensive placebos.

This introduces a new class of “quiet failure mode” in software pipelines: code that is fast to generate, fast to ship, and slow to detect when it’s wrong. Security teams should treat AI-generated code as inherently untrusted and expand review processes accordingly.

What happened:
A major Cloudflare outage caused widespread availability issues and forced some organizations to temporarily bypass Cloudflare protections. During this window, sites that removed Cloudflare from their traffic path were suddenly exposed to direct internet traffic, giving attackers an opportunity to probe previously shielded applications.
Why it matters:
This is another reminder that banks can maintain strong internal controls and still be compromised through smaller third parties touching regulated data. Mortgage servicing data is long-lived and cannot be rotated like credentials. Incidents at this layer drive regulatory scrutiny under OCC, FFIEC, and state data laws—even when the bank itself wasn’t breached. For security architects, the takeaway is clear: vendor segmentation, encryption-at-rest across partner platforms, and strict data minimization must be treated as core controls, not compliance checkboxes.

What now?
While this was a slow week due to the holiday, we cannot let defenses up. As cybersecurity experts, we know quiet weeks usually signal two things: adversaries don’t take time off, and the small signals matter. The DeepSeek R1 findings reinforce that risk isn’t always loud or wrapped in CVEs. Sometimes it’s in the scaffolding our developers lean on, the logic paths no scanner flags, or the subtle shifts in behavior when an LLM encounters politically sensitive or state-aligned topics.
The broader lesson is that AI isn’t neutral infrastructure. It brings its own failure modes, its own biases, and now its own security liabilities, especially when external political pressure can distort the code it produces. Treat AI-generated output the same way you treat untrusted user input. Validate it. Threat-model it. Break it. The pace of development is accelerating, but our guardrails have to keep up.
